Timing carries weight and thought

A quick head turn may suggest surprise; a delayed turn may suggest suspicion, exhaustion, or refusal. A heavy object often appears to need greater effort to start and settle, while a light object can respond quickly. These are designed impressions, not rigid formulas.

Character timing includes mental beats. The audience may need to see a discovery, then a reaction. Remove the pause and the character seems to know before noticing. Extend it too far and the thought may look lost in the mail.

Spacing shapes acceleration

Animators plan key poses and determine how motion travels among them. Drawings or digital poses clustered near a position make movement slower there; wider separation makes it faster. Curved paths add arcs, while overlapping parts can settle at different rates.

A held pose gives the audience time to read expression, composition, or anticipation. The pose still needs life: a character can breathe, shift focus, or maintain asymmetry without wandering. Unmotivated motion added to avoid stillness often weakens the idea.

Likewise, fast action needs readable anchors. Show a clear preparation, an extreme or contact, and the result. The eye may not inspect every in-between position, but it needs enough structure to understand what happened.

Test with simple shapes

Animate a circle moving between two points using the same frame count three times: equal spacing, acceleration, and deceleration. Then add a brief hold before departure. Compare not only speed but personality. One version may feel mechanical, another eager, another cautious.

Next, pose a simple character reaching for an object. Change only the pause before contact. Ask viewers what the character seems to think. This connects timing to character silhouette and posing without requiring detailed design.

Judge movement inside the edit
